Project Inclusion by Physitrack -
Digital first, but not digital-only

Closing the rehabilitation gap

Did you know that in Europe, there are on average thirteen physiotherapists for every 10,000 people, while in Asia, there is only one physiotherapist per 10,000 people on average, and in Africa even fewer? This ‘rehabilitation gap’ means millions of people are denied the recovery they deserve.

The need for rehabilitation worldwide is forecasted to increase, due to changes in the health and characteristics of the population- notably, people are living longer, but with more chronic conditions and disability.

Physitrack x Physiotools' Project Inclusion aims to overcome the rehabilitation gap by leveraging digital health innovation to ensure everyone can access the help they need. In collaboration with Business Finland, the Finnish Foreign Ministry, and other partners, we are developing digital tools to make rehabilitation services more accessible in Rwanda, Indonesia and Kenya. Piloting will soon begin in Tanzania as well.

How did we approach the challenge of rehabilitation?

Physitrack and its subsidiary Physiotools have the world's largest digital rehabilitation exercise library, offering solutions for nearly any rehabilitation problem.
1
As we launched Inclusion, local physiotherapists in Rwanda and Indonesia identified the most common rehabilitation needs in their country.
2
Local physiotherapists used the Physitrack/Physiotools home exercise library to design ready-made rehabilitation programs, referred to as content packages.
3
We developed content packages based on the learnings from the local healthcare systems and identified community health workers as our primary target group for a tailored app for the purpose - the Inclusion app.
4
Together with local physiotherapists, we selected pilot areas in both countries and trained community health workers to use the Inclusion app.
5
Community health workers used the Inclusion app when meeting citizens and addressing their rehabilitation needs by prescribing exercise programs. More challenging care cases were referred to physiotherapists for further care.
6

1. Physiotherapists design 'do-no harm' rehabilitation content packages within the Inclusion App.

2. Community Health workers help to explain the Inclusion App to communities

3. Individual end-users use the the Inclusion App to support their recovery journey.

Our Success

Our initial experiences indicate that, thanks to digital tools, one physiotherapist can now assist up to 10 times more end-users than before.

We have helped over 15,000 people, who would not otherwise have access to any kind of rehabilitation.

We are proud to conclude that this approach works in Rwanda and Indonesia. In Rwanda, 90% of people who have used our Inclusion App have stated it has helped them in their recovery journey.

This transformation wouldn’t be possible without our technology and the invaluable contribution of community health workers, who play a significant role in healthcare in both pilot countries.

Next Steps

We’re ready to help even more people. This means
our next goal is to scale up - taking the number of people
we help through Project Inclusion to XXX, XXX per annum.
This means more exercises shared, and more people getting
the rehabilitation they need to thrive.  To help us achieve this aim,
we have the following milestones:

Roll out the Inclusion App 2.0 - DONE!
Build in partnerships in X country, Y country and Z country (see below for how to partner with us).
